Clerical Assistant

Course Description: Working as a clerical assistant is often a good first career move. Clerical assistants provide basic administrative support to a team in an office.

Typical activities may include:
  • reception work
  • receiving, sorting and distributing post
  • organising, filing and photocopying
  • typing
  • data entry
  • setting up meeting rooms, organising refreshments for meetings and events
  • communications - organising faxes, sending emails and answering or making telephone calls.
The role of clerical assistant can be a good way of gaining experience in an office environment without the need for specific secretarial qualifications. This could help future career development and provide an opportunity to learn more about working in administration as well as gain valuable work experience.

Basic IT skills, such as use of Microsoft packages, email and the internet, are usually required. You can then pursue roles in HR, or as a PA by working 'up the ladder' from a clerical position. The subject you will study will equip you for those first steps.
